• Understanding someone’s pain can be difficult, but as massage therapists our understanding of a client’s pain is vital. Listening and gathering as much information as possible alongside observation and what we find during treatment is imperative.

Pain is always a personal experience that is influenced to varying degrees by biological, psychological and social factors.

The International Association for the Study of Pain describes the pain phenomenon as:

“An unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with, or resembling that associated with, actual or potential tissue damage.”

What is so important and becoming more recognized, are the results from pain.

For example, persistent pain naturally leads to emotional and behavioral consequences for the majority of clients. It can result in one having to withdraw or even remove themselves completely from activities what would otherwise bring them joy or fulfillment.

Treating pain holistically and going to the root of the cause is a massage therapist’s number one goal. We believe in aiding clients in not only treatment but in helping to create a long-term wellness plan to get clients in a position where they may be able to live their lives with as little pain as possible.

  • Like it or not, mobile devices have become a fundamental part of modern life for most people. As of 2024, 90% of United States adults own a smartphone. Better yet, there is a significant amount of people using a screen in general be it through phone or the computer.

With the computer, that finds many individuals living more of a sedentary lifestyle as they are fulfilling work obligations.

It is well known that this lack of movement causes severe health issues. These can lead to increased forward head posture and excessive loading on the cervical spine. Studies have shown that excessive sitting can lead to increased risks of cardiovascular disease, obesity, and musculoskeletal problems, including tech neck.

Many people have expressed wanting to limit their screen time to help relieve that neck pressure and pain but what also deserves a little attention is the lower body imbalance. After all, everything is connected.

What can be done to combat this? Movement. This could be just a slight walk around, investing in a supportive chair, or even one of those stand/sit desks that have been growing in popularity over the last few years.

People are realizing just how heavily affected their bodies become with a sedentary lifestyle. After all, sitting is often referred to as “the new smoking” due to its widespread negative health effects.
